FOLLY

7,000 cubic ft - Playground equipment

Children’s work is play; through play they discover their bodies, relationships to those around them, problem solving skills, and ways of working with others. The Folly gives children space to do this work. This particular version includes two slides, a fort, a climbing wall, portals, light wells, a wading pool, a beach/bench, a nap nook, and a tea table; however, the size and type of any play structure is arrived at wholly with its users. The size and type of Folly can be customized to address the owners’ needs.

The Folly’s form derives from the oval’s double foci. The geometry is calibrated into a parametric model that negotiates scale, program, size, and orientation to generate buildable forms.

The Folly looks to longevity of material use and effectiveness. Each Folly is built from carbon neutral mass plywood panels harvested from early-growth renewable forests and low emission, nonformaldehyde adhesives and may be outfitted with a solar generating skin of PV panels to return energy to the grid or user. It is designed for construction and deconstruction: helical screw pile foundations and standalone technology allow a folly to be repositioned or relocated entirely. And the entire structure is recyclable: the PVs can be recycled as plastic and the wood may be allowed to return to the earth or can similarly be recycled. Once designed and cut, a folly can be assembled as a barn-raising project or as a smaller piece-by-piece kit, both manageable for a variety and ages and sizes.
